Women ovulate and go on their periods monthly. For some women, that time of the month is nothing but pain. It’s an excruciating pain accompanied by heavy bleeding that they go through on a monthly basis. These symptoms could be from a number of reasons: It could be Fibroids, Endometriosis or Polycystic ovary syndrome.
One in three women suffer from the chronic pain of Endometriosis. It is usually under diagnosed as it can only be diagnosed by an ultrasound, however others can be misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all during an ultrasound. Others are diagnosed with a small procedure called the Laparoscopy – this can determine if you are indeed suffering from Endometriosis or not.
Many doctors avoid surgical procedures and usually try pain management first with the patient. But to be certain you have endometriosis, your doctor may refer you to a Gynaecologist to look inside your abdomen for signs of endometriosis using a surgical procedure called laparoscopy.
What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a condition where tissue, similar to that found within the uterus, grows outside the uterus in areas such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes and bowel. As hormones change during the menstrual cycle, this tissue acts in the same way as the endometrium – it builds up and breaks down
Endometriosis is when excess endometrium lining of the uterus that normally grows in preparation for the implanting of the egg begins, this does not completely shed during menstruation.
Endometriosis can be a chronic condition, it can be diagnosed and treated however it can not be cured. In other women Endometriosis may cause infertility while other women are able to conceive.
How to treat Endometriosis?
That longstanding urban myth that pregnancy cures Endometriosisis just that – a big myth. Falling pregnant may not necessarily cure the Endometriosis, there many women who have children who still suffer from Endometriosis
Laparoscopy
Laparoscopy is an operation performed in the abdomen or pelvis through small incisions with the aid of a camera. The laparoscope aids diagnosis or therapeutic interventions with a few small cuts in the abdomen. The most common risks associated with laparoscopy are bleeding, infection, and damage to organs in your abdomen. However, these are rare occurrences. During the Laparocopy if Endometriosis is found, it can be treated by cautery or laser vaporization, to “burn-off” the endometrial implants.
After your procedure, the first month of periods after the procedure the pain is till unbearable for the next 3 months however these symptoms differ from women to women.
According to Dr Joanne Pottow is a Gynaecologist and Obstetrician there is no cure for Endometriosis. Even after “burning off” the endometrial implants they may still grow and a woman may suffer from Endometriosis again.
