Executive Mayor Mpho Phalatse reiterates that she rejects the 20.5% electricity tariff hike by Eskom.
The City of Johannesburg made a submission to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) stating that it rejects Eskom’s proposed tariff hike.
The formal objection was lodged by Phalatse last week at the NERSA hearings in Midrand.
The City of Johannesburg is the economic hub of South Africa and because of the pandemic, it requires suppliers to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
This includes Eskom as a supplier of electricity to the city.
City Power supplies the city with electricity that it purchases from Eskom.
If the hike is imposed, it will have a direct impact on consumers.
Most consumers are already burdened by the underperformance of the economy which is still on the road to recovery.
“We do believe that a lot of the costs in Eskom’s proposed tariff hike are overstated. We have given submissions where we think they [Eskom] can cut them down, and we hope that we will get a favourable response from the regulator.” Executive Mayor Mpho Phalatse.
