Nine years since the Marikana Massacre which claimed the lives of 34 miners, the families of the victims have lamented the empty promises they’ve received since the 2012 tragedy.
On the 16th of August 34 striking miners and 8 other people, including a security guard were killed by police near the then Lonmin platinum mine.

Marikana Massacre: 9 years later, empty promises still follow victims’ families Natasha
The live Marikana Massacre commemoration is currently underway and is being hosted by The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU).
According to COSATU, plans are in place to mobilize resources to push for the implementation of the recommendations made by the Farlam Commission which recommended that all the victims should be equally compensated.
The community feels betrayed by mining companies that promised a better life, however residents who were relocated in 2011 say service delivery is still non-existent.
The miners’ fight for a better life and demands for a living wage of R 12,500 fell on deaf ears with many political parties slamming the ANC for bloodshed which was the first show of police brutality since apartheid.

The EFF opened a criminal case against the police and against Cyril Ramaphosa for his complicity in the miners’ murders and according to CIC Julius Malema there is still no progress, and no update on what the South African Police Service has done about this case.
“If the NPA does not prosecute Ramaphosa or issue a non-prosecuting letter in the next 3-months we are taking them to the high court, so that they prosecute or allow us to pursue private prosecution,” Julius Malema.
