It’s not often a pilot series from South Africa gets picked up by an international streaming platform. And when everyone is talking about it everywhere you go, you pick up major FOMO vibes.
Kings of Jo’burg, a local series available for streaming on Netflix, highlights the criminal underbelly of the country.
The plot thickens
Starring and produced by the Fergusons, Shona and Connie, the series focuses on two brothers, Mogomotsi “Mo” Masire (Zolisa Xaluva) and Simon “Vader” Masire (Shona Ferguson).
The pilot series ventures into fantastical territory with Simon being a “shape-shifter” who can transform into something that bypasses thermal detection. Cue Connie Ferguson who is a “mermaid” that is a spiritual guide, and you have a blend of the criminal and the surreal living side by side on the city’s streets.

Kings of Joburg is shot predominantly within the suburbs and streets of Johannesburg and includes a strong list of local talent.

It’s binge-worthy and we give kudos to Netflix for investing in South African productions. We’re keen on finding out if the pilot gets picked up for a second season. Because we’re intrigued by the supernatural family curse that seems determined to destroy the Masire brothers.
We have mad love for the Fergusons and anything out of the country gets our support. Put this on your watchlist for the holidays.
