Toyota South Africa held its annual state of the motor industry address this week in Kyalami. Apart from the loadshedding woes, the South African motor industry is showing some green shoots after the devastation caused by covid and subsequently the shortage of semiconductors. According to Andrew Kirby, President of Toyota SA, the industry is going to grow by 7.8% in 2023 to 570 000 units.
A quick look at the numbers and think how you could plug in and be a part of the growth.
The motor industry both local and abroad have always had some of the most interesting jobs. It’s time we dipped in a little and see what some of these interesting jobs are. Let us for a moment park the ones that are common but find the ones that nobody talks about but have the potential to set you up for a good life and fantastic job satisfaction.
There are many layers and processes that take place before that shiny metal hits the showroom floor.
Somebody took paper and pencil (computer) and let his/her imagination runaway. Then a certain masterpiece was born.
Herewith with a few of these rather interesting motor industry careers you could follow:
- Car designer(exterior)
- Car interior designer
- Detailer
- Paint sprayer
- Sound engineer/examiner
- Mechanical Engineer (specialising in automotive engines)
- Test driver
- Seat tester
- Visual Artist (mainly for selection of interior colours)
- Sculptor
There is even a car tailor for that matter, these guys choose fabrics, leathers and other material making up the interior of the car.
Tell you what, if you are young and haven’t decided what you want to do, the motor industry might just be the place for you to. But first things first, get down to the research before you make the decision to enroll for a certain course at university.
