South African muso Ishmael recently joined The Hive with Bonolo BeeSting for a sitdown interview in honour of his 30 years in the music industry.
One of the key aspects Ishmael attributes his enduring success to is his willingness to explore and embrace different genres of music. This has allowed him to adapt and evolve over time. “You don’t change anything about yourself, you just sing on any beat. That’s how I managed to maneuver,” he shared.
Ishmael has made some regrettable choices in his career, making him the target of occasional mockery. However, he firmly believes that not all human beings are inherently bad. “You find people who tend to be bad due to the circumstances that they are going through. Even a bad person is not bad all the time,” he added
“That’s where the music comes in. We try to make people happy and forget about their problems for that particular time.”
Ishmael also spoke fondly about his time with Jozi, calling it the proudest moment of his illustrious career. “It was groundbreaking and contributed so much to South African hip-hop,” said the musician who is finding his voice again.
