YouTube follows Netflix with family plan crackdown

YouTube has begun restricting the use of its Premium Family memberships to people living within the same household, mirroring a move by Netflix that frustrated users but boosted subscriber numbers.
The Google-owned video platform recently started sending emails to subscribers accessing the service far from the location of the primary account holder, also known as the family manager.
The Siz The World team discussed the change and questioned whether people would choose a YouTube Premium subscription simply to avoid seeing ads.
Sizwe Dhlomo said the adverts do not bother him.
“The ad is part of the programming. If I was listening to a show without ads, I’d find it strange.”
For Mpho Maboi, the experience is different.
“Here’s my thing. When it comes to YouTube, I watch a lot of podcasts and I don’t want ads. That’s why I’m on YouTube Premium. On radio it’s different. From a radio perspective, I’m commercially minded. A show has to sell,” she explained.
