A recent comment by US President Donald Trump sparked a conversation on Siz The World about the uncomfortable situations people often find themselves in when they need something from someone in power.
During an engagement with African leaders, Trump reportedly complimented the President of Liberia by asking, “Where did you learn to speak English so beautifully?” – a remark many have called patronising and tone-deaf.
This prompted the Siz The World team to pose the question: “Have you ever had to take disrespect because you needed something from somebody?”
Mpho Maboi weighed in by saying it’s important to pick your battles wisely.
“In this instance, I came here looking to foster a relationship. I know this person is a volatile human being and can do worse than what he did now. If all the insight you’re going to offer me is that I speak good English, I’m going to swallow it,” she said.
She referenced an incident from the old Studio Mix days involving the late Bob Mabena and Mel Bala.
“There was a compliment that just didn’t land well. Mel could’ve rebutted – he meant it as a compliment, but it came out wrong. She was on live television, though, so she chose not to respond,” Mpho explained.
“That’s why I always say there’s a time and a place for everything.”Maboi stressed that sometimes it’s wiser to take the high road.
“There are moments when someone says something that rubs you the wrong way, but the repercussions of clapping back might be more damaging than simply taking the L,” she added.
