On Tuesday, a group of around sixty irate demonstrators were stationed outside the Department of Health in Johannesburg and got naked in full view of the public.
Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to Andries Potsane, secretary general of the South African Cleaners Security and Allied Workers Union (Sacsaawu) who gave reasons why the incident occurred.
Listen to the full conversation here:
According to Andries Potsane, the protest was based on the exploitation of security workers and abuse by the service providers which led to the members camping outside The Department of Health.
Potsane claimed that after working for Security Service Providers since 2024, these security officers were fired without cause and left without a job.
He said the Department failed to control these service providers, and that is why as a union they decided to instruct their members to strike for insourcing and absorption of security officers.
“They are doing as they wish, there is no control and there is no one who tells them anything. If they want to pay you after 65 days, they can do that. If they don’t want to pay you provident fund, they can easily do that.
“A Memorandum of Demands was submitted to the Office of MEC on 22 March 2024, but the office refused to respond to members’ demands. “Grievance letters were sent to the Department of Health for None Compliance of Service Providers”
