Kabelo Gwamanda, Johannesburg Community Development MMC, will report to Mayor Dada Morero on Tuesday on the fraud accusations filed against him.
Following his voluntary police surrender on Friday, Gwamanda was reportedly arrested and charged with fraud, although he has since been released on bail. The former mayor is accused of tricking poor Soweto residents into participating in a burial insurance program that required monthly premiums.
Gwamanda oversaw the company from 2011 until his resignation, which occurred while policyholders attempted to file claims under the program.
The Democratic Alliance has welcomed Gwamanda’s arrest saying the latest developments, while overdue, further confirms the party’s warnings about the ANC and its coalition partners’ failure to provide ethical and transparent leadership for the people of Johannesburg.
Phemelo speaks to the DA’s Johannesburg Caucus Leader Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku.
