Government pushes ahead with a plan to procure new nuclear energy.
According to Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Minister of Electricity, the government will acquire 2,500MW of new nuclear energy, which is expected to go online in 2032 or 2033.
The government is still deciding whether to build large reactors that resemble those found at conventional nuclear power plants or whether smaller, recently commercialized modular reactors would be a better fit.
Koeberg which has a capacity of around 1,900 MW, and provides around 5% of the country’s energy needs. It is the only nuclear power plant in South Africa.

Ramokgopa has said the cabinet plans to extend the life of Koeberg by 20 years as part of a strong push towards nuclear energy.
Ten to fifteen years have been projected to pass during the construction process.
