Rwandan president Paul Kagame has accused South African president Cyril Ramaphosa of lying about the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) meetings.
Kagame responded to media reports about his recent meetings with Ramaphosa on the situation in Eastern DRC and accused both the media and Ramaphosa of distorting the facts and misrepresenting the discussions.
He voiced worry that public statements made by South African authorities, including Ramaphosa, comprised inaccuracies, deliberate attacks, and lies. Kagame emphasised that such disparities between private chats and public pronouncements demonstrate fundamental flaws in how these vital topics are handled.
In his remarks, Kagame clarified a few topics. He originally stated that the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) is a professional force, not a militia, as some media accounts have claimed.
“I held two conversations this week with President Ramaphosa on the situation in Eastern DRC, including earlier today. What has been said about these conversations in the media by South African officials and President Ramaphosa himself contains a lot of distortion, deliberate attacks, and even lies. If words can change so much from a conversation to a public statement, it says a lot about how these very important issues are being managed,” wrote Kagame.
