David Mahlobo, deputy minister of the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), has filed a criminal case against Jagersfontein Developments Project (JPD) mine following a devastating tailings dam wall collapse in the Free State.
The tragic incident that occurred in Jagersfontein on September 11, 2022, left more than 200 people homeless, two people were found dead, and one woman is still missing.
According to Mahlobo, the department obtained information indicating that the JDP mine operation had a significant negative impact on water resources during the early stages of the operation.

Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to the Deputy Minister of the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), David Mahlobo, who explained why he felt there was a need to open the case.

“We have the responsibility as a government to act when an owner of a facility like this failed to take certain actions. Today, on the basis of that we have completed with our own assessment, we’re now opening a case on the basis of the National Water Act,” said Mahlobo.
