An unemployed mother who used Google tutorials to allegedly master how to print fake Rands inspired the topic of conversation on Kaya Drive on Wednesday afternoon, 01 November.
The Pietermaritzburg woman was arrested and faces charges of producing and counterfeit money.
As reported by IOL, the 42-year old is a qualified geotechnician, who cannot be named as she reportedly used her 17-year old son in her alleged illegal dealings.
After both she and her husband lost their jobs during Covid-19, the ingenious mother watch Google tutorials and perfected the skill of first scanning R100 and R200 notes and then printed them using a standard printer.
The counterfeit notes reportedly could not be distinguised from real Rands, and the unemployed woman had reportedly sold stacks of the fake notes.
She is also accused of using her fake money to buy essential goods.
The woman was released on R1 000 bail and is expected back in court on 13 November.
While the woman did break the law, her innovative method of upskilling using online interventions sparked Thomas and Skhumba into considering learning a new skill from tutorials on YouTube and Google.
One listener shared that he spent 3-months watching videos on how to install wireless internet, and today that’s his bread and butter, turning his new skill into a business.
