With the festive season approaching, South Africans have been warned to be on high alert for new ways criminals have adopted to target their victims.
From using “distressed and helpless” women and children to manipulate female drivers at filling stations, before luring them into a hijacking or violent robbery, to creating an elaborate public scene just to distract you from focusing on your belongings.
With this in mind, Thomas and Skhumba wanted to know if listeners would still offer to help a stranger “in need”, and given the current crime rate in the country and province, the answer is a resounding, no!
One listener, a male real estate agent shared his experience with the Kaya Drive stand-in presenters and how helping a stranger “in need” ended with him at a police station.
“I will never help a stranger again, I got my hands burnt. Sometimes you do things from the goodness of your heart and it backfires, I ended up at the police station.
To cut a long story short, there was a young lady, the same age as my first born under the bridge at Comaro Crossing, (south of Johannesburg) and I asked myself, ‘what could this girl be doing here?’ Then I stopped and asked her what she was doing there, and she gave me a long story which didn’t make sense.
So, I asked her where she was going, and I found out we live in the same area, so I said okay, I’ll take you home.
I made it clear to her, I’m a real estate agent and I have to check the renovations on a project I had in Winchester Hills. When I get to the property I asked her if she wants to come inside, she said she’ll stay in the car.
I went inside to check the renovations, and I was there for a while, like 10 or 15 minutes. During this time, this young lady called her cousin and said somebody had kidnapped her.
When I got out there were 3 cars surrounding my car, guys were swearing at me, telling me I’m a pervert, and I had to say you know what let’s just go to the police station.
So, I called one of my friends who is a cop and I asked him to drive with me. We get to the police station and after they interviewed the young lady, she confessed she was lying and she came to apologise to me.
After that I will never help anyone again.”
