The small, everyday signs someone is doing well financially, according to Kaya Breakfast listeners.

In this economy, wealth doesn’t always look like a flashy car or a designer bag. Sometimes it’s a lot quieter than that, and DJ Fresh, Thato and the team got into exactly that on Kaya Breakfast.
The conversation started with a simple but very telling question: in a climate where load shedding, data costs and grocery bills have most of us budgeting to the last cent, what are the small, everyday signs that someone is actually doing just fine?
Here’s what the team landed on:
They never check their data balance before opening WhatsApp.
For most of us, that little pause before hitting send on a voice note is a lifestyle. If someone just opens the app and goes, no hesitation, no anxious glance at their network’s app first, that’s a quiet flex.
Their trolley is full at the till.
Not a basket. Not a strategic trolley with gaps where the “maybe next time” items would go. A full trolley, no negotiating with the cashier in their head.
They have solar panels.
In a country where load shedding has become a personality trait, not needing to know the schedule is its own kind of luxury.
It’s a fun list, but it says a lot about where our heads are at right now. The things we’ve come to associate with being “secretly rich” aren’t yachts and holidays, they’re just… not having to think twice about the basics.
