Black Friday is a shopper’s paradise as companies and brands mark down prices exorbitantly, internationally as well as locally.
In South Africa, one online shopper already spent R600 000 the day before the official start of Black Friday 2023.
This was confirmed by Ozow’s payment platform, which tracked the Top 3 customers by amount spent and number of transactions.
Joining Gugulethu Mfuphi on Kaya Biz, Takealot.com CEO Frederick Zietsman says most purchases were made on the retailer’s early access deals, with TVs, iPads, mobile devices being the most popular purchases on Black Friday.
Apart from large and small appliances and electronics, Frederick shares that there were also a number of bulk items of food and drinks purchased, indicating that many people are looking to pantry stock ahead of the festive season.
“Some early access insight shows that people are bulk buying, we are seeing people making purchases for bulk alcohol, grocery items, canned goods showing consumers are really pantry loading on Black Friday.
This trend has been prominent over the past few months as consumers are more constrained with their income, and look to pantry load and bulk buy in order to save money.
Other items like consumables, beauty products and categories that are more accessible on price points are popular choices, but there are still big demands for electronics, appliances, large appliances are likely to be the categories featuring prominently in carts on Black Friday.”
