In a recent engaging segment on Feel Good with Andy Maqondwana the topic of “unspoken rules” among colleagues at work sparked lively discussion.
Maqondwana delved into the subtle, often unwritten codes of conduct that shape workplace dynamics and interactions.
Andy asked: “Let’s chat about rules in the office, cause let’s think about it. When you are around your colleagues, you spend a large amount of you time around them. So you develop a particular system that works for you. You even develop a particular language so you can speak about your bosses or other colleagues in front of them.
You do this because you don’t want to whisper. You have also developed particular strategies on how you can deal with your bosses and other colleagues. You have also developed particular rules and ways of doing things that not only bring about harmony but also allow for strategic alignment. So what are the rules you and your colleagues have developed amongst yourself in the office.”
Listeners called in and shared their experiences, shedding light on the informal etiquette that can either foster harmony or cause friction, from managing shared fridge space to navigating office gossip and the delicate balance of personal and professional boundaries.
