Things you only realized were expensive when you became an adult.
Everybody experiences adulthood at a distinct point in time. When forced to shop for their clothes, take care of themselves, or make decisions on their own, some people begin to feel like adults. There is a point where we all have to take care of ourselves, and we need all the financial resources, and everything is just too expensive these days.
Others experience it when they attend college and have greater independence, such as not having to ask permission to go out. That resonates with me as well since I recall how things were different in my youth.
