Traditionally, adults are seen as the ultimate decision-makers in the household. But in today’s world, how much influence do children have?
This week on The Drive 959, the team explored the surprising ways kids shape decisions at home, from shopping lists to holiday plans, and how parental authority isn’t always as clear-cut as it seems.
Skhumba shared a light-hearted confession about how his children convinced him to buy gaming consoles.
“It wasn’t my decision,” he said with a laugh. “My daughter sent me a list of clothes she wants. I’m going to buy them because these kids are putting us under so much pressure!”
Kgomotso agreed that children can be “bosses in the house” but drew the line at certain decisions.
“Some things are non-negotiable, like which school he attends or which house we live in — unless she has a very strong reason behind it.”
Glen added that it all comes down to finances.
“It depends on how much money is available. Holiday destinations need to be investigated. The clothes they wear? No big deal, it just depends on the price.”
That said, there are still clear boundaries. Glen made it clear that his kids won’t be choosing which car he drives or who he dates.
