A reality facing many South Africans is the ever-growing accumulation of waste that is no longer being collected.
While municipal failures are often the first to be blamed, residents frequently feel powerless as they wait for solutions to the mounting rubbish polluting their roads, walkways, parks, and water systems.
Candice Mostert, Founder and Director of Waste Ed, recently joined Drive 959 with Glen to discuss what ordinary South Africans can do to help tackle this pressing issue.
Mostert pointed out that if people could shop package-free—without relying on plastic bags—we would see a shift in South Africa’s throwaway culture.
She also shared small but impactful steps individuals and communities can take.
“What we can do in the interim is change ourselves. Even something as simple as refusing straws, not littering, or kindly reminding others not to litter,” Mostert explained.
