Drive 959 with Glen Lewis spoke about faking it with fake brands, and wondered if people admit that they gifted someone a fake clothing brand or not.
The counterfeit brand market is booming in South Africa, and is threatening The Business of Luxury, as discussed with Michael Zahariev and Kaya Biz presenter, Gugulethu Mfuphi.
For some, the fake clothing brands and items look close enough to the real luxury brands and they see no problem with gifting or personally using these items.
Others would never play with their reputation in this way, because the fake items look cheap and you can see it from a mile away.
According to the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa, it is estimated that counterfeiting could account for as much as 10% of the South African economy.
This counterfeiting poses a real risk to consumers as it potentially exposes them to unsafe or dangerous products while making it more difficult for local authentic manufacturers to remain competitive and deprives governments of tax revenue that could contribute to much-needed service delivery.
