Residents of Gordon’s Bay in Cape Town were in for a surprise recently when they woke up to a Southern Elephant Seal casually roaming their neighbourhood streets.
According to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, the large marine mammal had re-emerged from the waters near the Naval Base in Simon’s Town.
The rare sighting sparked conversation across the city, proving that not every day brings such unusual wildlife encounters right to your doorstep.
The Drive 959 team joined in on the excitement, using the moment to ask: “What’s the strangest thing that’s ever happened outside your home? Listeners were encouraged to share their own unexpected neighbourhood stories.
Glen Lewis kicked things off with a personal story:
“There are a couple of speed humps outside my house because of a sharp curve. If you make a mistake, you’re in my neighbour’s wall. I’ve seen at least three or four cars crash there,” he said.
“The insurance guys have even come to my place asking if I witnessed the accidents.”
