The recent social media saga between Onezwa and Nara Smith has sparked a conversation about racial solidarity among Black people and whether it exists or not.
With social media divided over Onezwa calling out the US model and influencer for “stealing” the South African content creator’s ideas, the Drive 959 team asked why it’s so hard for Black people to unite behind each other?
Onezwa who creates food content using items she grows, raises or forages, received a lot of backlash for accusing the popular US-based Nara Smith for replicating her recipes.
Instead of standing in support of Onezwa, many South Africans felt she was reaching, and trying to discredit Nara whose videos on TikTok always goes viral.
After speaking out against Nara Smith, Onezwa has since been threatened with legal action unless the defamatory allegations are retracted.
The beef between Onezwa and Nara Smith has escalated to the point that Onezwa was at the receiving end of harsh and hateful comments by social media users in her own country.
In defence of Nara Smith, South Africans told Onezwa she was just looking for clout and called her a small creator who is just jealous of the 22-year old mother of 3.
South African celebrity Somizi who is a fan of Nara, shared a response to Onezwa as well, telling her to keep doing what she does because it should flatter her that she’s inspiring people around the world.
Was Onezwa looking for online racial solidarity?
