This week, the Drive 959 team posed an intriguing question to listeners: “Do you sometimes worry that if you reveal too much of your true self to your partner, they might reject you?”
When a great relationship comes your way, it can feel like winning the lottery. But does the fear of losing that connection make us hold back parts of ourselves we think might be “too much” for our partner?
If we do hold back, how long can we keep doing so without losing who we truly are? Are you suppressing aspects of your personality, your mannerisms, or even your true behaviours? Perhaps you’re hiding your deepest desires because you’re worried your partner might not be able to handle the truth.
“Sometimes it’s not even about your current partner but stems from past relationship experiences,” noted Kgomotso Meso. “You might have been told your light was too bright, and now you’re uncomfortable expressing yourself the way you’d like.”
She added, “What I’ve observed with men is this feeling of not being enough. No matter how much you do, there’s always another man who can bring more money or provide more than you.”
Skhumba contributed to the layered discussion, sharing his perspective: “As a man, you sometimes go out of your way to make a woman happy, only to realise it’s still not enough. In the process, you neglect yourself trying to meet their expectations.”
