On January 12th of this year, our beloved Thabo ‘Tbose’ Mokwele celebrated his 50th birthday. This was not only a significant milestone for him and his family, but also for the entire South African broadcasting industry. Tbose has played a crucial role in shaping the radio landscape in South Africa, and his success has spanned nearly three decades—an achievement that few can boast.
For almost 20 years, Tbose has been a part of the Kaya 959 family, delivering The Best T (best tea) to our listeners every weekday morning.
Organising a surprise 50th birthday party for someone as towering (excuse the pun) as Tbose was no easy feat. The Kaya 959 team had to plan this while also involving his loved ones, including his wife, while ensuring that he remained unaware. Fortunately, everything fell into place, thanks to the universe conspiring in our favor.
As Tbose walked into the Kaya 959 building on Thursday morning, he had no idea what awaited him. Ready to deliver another exceptional radio show, as he always does, little did he know that this would be dedicated to him by us, his loved ones, and, most importantly, his listeners.
His wife, Mapaseka Mokwele, took the opportunity to express her heartfelt gratitude and love for her husband.
“Thank you for always being there. Thank you for your love, and thank you for being you. When he told me he was going to marry me, he promised me a long and beautiful life, and he has kept that promise. I met him in his 20s, and now he is in his 50s.”
