Anonymous recently got married, and his marriage hasn’t been anywhere close to what he had imagined. His in-laws continue to meddle in their affairs and undermine his authority. This has left him frustrated. So much so that he is beginning to doubt his marriage.
“My wife and I have been married for a year now, and our marriage has been nothing like I expected. She comes from a well-off family, and they are also really close. Her sisters are always around, and her sisters always want to know what we are planning. It feels like I have a board to answer to. I thought we would be independent so that we could make our own decisions and even our own mistakes. I have spoken to her about this, but nothing has changed. If anything, it’s getting worse,” Anonymous wrote to the Best T in the City.
“I am capable of catering to my wife and our needs, but her father just wants to upgrade everything we are trying to do, and she welcomes it. I really don’t know what to do anymore. I love her, but I can’t take it anymore.”
A listener advises Anonymous to man up, as things could get worse. “He is not going to be able to have control. I once had a girlfriend, and my father saw it and said, ‘This family is going to control you.’ Anonymous was supposed to see all those things before they even got married. Such families are very dangerous because they are going to control everything, including the kids. He must ask to meet up with the family to allow him to be a husband and father to his wife and children,” he warned.
One listener sees no problem with the actions of the in-laws. “The dad is just trying to help out. Why can’t we just accept that the father is only trying to help?” She said.
Another listener who was once in a similar situation says Anonymous should consider a divorce. “It seems like you are married to your in-laws. There’s no decision he will make. He is just a passenger. Sometimes it feels like, ‘Let me just keep quiet and let the train move’. It’s not healthy,” he said.
