“Is there a financial chokehold that is holding you back?” Asks 959 Breakfast with Dineo Ranaka and Sol Phenduka.
“I just see some as responsibilities. Once it becomes a problem or an obstacle I normally just cut it off. I would never downgrade on school fees, it’ll be the last thing I’ll downgrade it,” adds Sol Phenduka.
Dr Tshepiso Matentjie our resident Psychologist, says some of it has to do with our own emotions. For example, “taking your child to an expensive school might feel like a sense of accomplishment.”
However, a lot of it has to do with “the type of environment we grew up in. you might find that you are coming from a family that was struggling so much that you didn’t feel valued.”
Dr Matenjie continues: “As soon as the child graduates the family might want everyone in the neighborhood to know about their child’s achievement.
“Or you might not want to spend money and are constantly stingy because of your past relationship with money.”
She encourages listeners to try and understand and look beyond what it is that they have been trying to achieve.
“You need to look at the factors that are informing the way that you have a relationship with money. Especially now at the beginning of the year when we have so many responsibilities.”
