Education Specialist, Professor Mary Metcalfe, joined Kgomotso Meso and Sol Phenduka to share insights on the role and impact of having student governing bodies in the school system.
Prof. Metcalfe explained that the well-being of a school is deeply connected to the community. “If you look at the big headlines about bullying and sexual abuse, that is broader than a problem that teachers can deal with on their own. This is a community issue that is linked to what is happening in the community. So parents need to be involved.”
She continued, “It is also a question of the maintenance of the resources of the school and the investment in those resources. So whether or not you are at a school that is fee-paying or non-fee-paying, the way that the school is maintained is critical in terms of maintaining that resource and also in creating an environment in which they must feel respected and feel that they have dignity. None of that can happen without the parents’ involvement, and the mechanism for organising that is the school governing body.”
