According to an article published in The Conversation, the average American invests US$ 120,000 (R2.3 million) throughout their lifetime in pursuit of love, spending significant money on romantic dinners, movie outings, and thoughtful gifts, not to mention personal grooming and cosmetic products.
Additionally, according to a survey by LendingTree, 22% of millennials and 19% of Gen Zs have begun to incur “dating debt. 959 Breakfast discussed this phenomenon, asking listeners what value they place in their relationships.
Sharing his perspective on the study, Sol Phenduka concurs that dating can be quite expensive nowadays, with people feeling compelled to spend more due to the influence of social media. “I was on vacation recently, and someone else might have seen the content that I posted and felt pressured to do the same,” he said.
“You might find that someone saved so they could afford that holiday, and someone else ends up putting themselves in debt to compete.” However, admittedly, Sol admits that going out is necessary in relationships. “You don’t need to spend a lot because it is important to do fun things once in a while,” he added.
