We recently had the privilege of decoding one of Mzansi’s most decorated musicians in Simphiwe Dana on 959 Breakfast with Dineo Ranaka and Sol Phenduka.
During the exclusive sit-down, Simphiwe Dana opened up about her horrific car accident in 2005.
“I’ve had two plastic surgeries to fix my face, the first one was obviously after the accident.”
She reveals that it was so bad that one side of her face was sloppy.
“It was just so bad and I didn’t want to look at myself in the mirror. I had to stay like that for two years before I could have the next surgery.
“The wound had to heal and it was so deep. It would take a really long time to heal. It has become some kind of signature.”
The singer recalls thinking that her career was over.
“I thought my career was over when that happened because we are in a very fickle industry. That’s when I got to learn that my music was much bigger.”
Simphiwe Dana shares that she’s never had to depend on her beauty.
“I’ve never turned into my beauty for anything.
“I have to admit that I was aware that I am an attractive person. When I was in a room – people smiled. It’s not really something I use for anything.
“It’s more about being creative than anything else.”
