In the wake of the passing of legendary musician Tina Turner, a video clip of an interview she did with Larry King on CNN has surfaced, where she speaks about leaving the U.S. to be a Swiss citizen.
Head of Special Projects at ISS, Ottilia Maunganidze, joined the conversation, speaking to Sizwe Dhlomo on 959 Breakfast about what it takes to renounce your citizenship.
Ottilia says it depends from country to countrt. “Most would give you 10 years if you have lived in that country and then you can apply for naturalisation,” she explains.
And for places that are in high-demand for skills or people, naturalisation will be allowed you to based on investment. “In some countries you are able to pay a certain amount that allows you to be a key investor and you can be able to apply for citizenship,” adds Ottiliia.
Can one’s citizenship be revoked?
The answer is yes! In South Africa, if you do not inform the department of home affairs of your intention to take out another citizenship, “Your citizenship is automatically revoked,” warns Otillia.
If you want to keep your South African citizenship, the best thing is to, “inform home affairs that you are taking up a secondar one and then in the country that you are applying, let them know that you hold current citizenship,” said the Head of Special Projects at ISS.
Listeners contributed by sharing whether they would renounce their South African citizenship or not.
