Sizwe Dhlomo notes that when it comes to African culture, “we’re very sentimental when it comes to our belongings and assets.” One might find that even when they have a house, they’ll still keep their parents’ house long after they pass on. They’ll even keep the furniture.
Sizwe doesn’t think that this is always the best approach, considering the current state of our economy. “There, you just have money sitting there. Whereas you could possibly sell that and use the money for something else,” he said.
“Even when it comes to downscaling, the kind of houses that we live in are way too big for an individual. There are rooms in my house that I never go to.”
