This morning on 959 Breakfast with Dineo Ranaka and Sol Phenduka, we hung out with acclaimed South African actress Nthati Moshesh.
Nthati is best known for her leading roles in the drama series Home Affairs and the soapie 7de Laan.
In 2004 she won a Canadian Gemini Award for her role as Odette in Human Cargo, as well as for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Supporting Role in a Dramatic Program or Mini-Series.
Speaking about her success and longevity, Nthati notes that because she started in theatre, her approach to the industry and fame was different.
“I started back in the early 90s, there was disciplined that was unparalleled. And because we started in theatre and there is something about theatre actors -we can even spot each other when we are on set.
“There is just a mindset. We treat it as a craft. Remember we didn’t get into it to be famous. We got into it because we loved storytelling.”
Nthati, who had aspirations of making it in music, says it’s her headmaster who discovered she could act.
“My late headmaster is the one who called my father into his office because I studied music. He told him that I would be better at drama than music. This was in standard 7. He is the one who started this journey for me.”

Touching on the state South Africa finds itself in, the thespian believes there’s a lot of healing that needs to happen.
“There’s a lot of healing that this country has never ever gone through. There’s a debriefing that didn’t happen after 1994 that was supposed to happen.
“We are living in a country that is so volatile that you are even afraid of stepping on someone’s toes because you don’t know the rage level of that person.”
