On Monday morning, Sizwe Dhlomo shared an interesting story from his recent travels to the U.S. He recounted his experience with the driver who chauffeured him around Los Angeles, who also happened to be the owner of the transportation company. Interestingly, the driver subtly hinted that he was expecting a generous tip from Sizwe.
This sparked a discussion among the team about the evolving culture of tipping, and they invited their listeners to share their tips on dealing with this practice.
Sizwe Dhlomo pointed out that nowadays, it seems like people expect tips even before providing any service. “Before you even know what the quality of the service is going to be,” he said.
“And in some restaurants, you find that the tip has already been mandated, so when you pay the bill, it has already been added. I don’t think that’s right; you shouldn’t tip if you are not satisfied with the service.”
Adding to the conversation, Sol Phenduka emphasized that the term “gratuity” exists for a reason. “It’s a way of expressing gratitude for exceptional service and going the extra mile. It shouldn’t be a standard expectation that we’ve all come to accept.”
Sizwe Dhlomo further highlighted that some restaurants already included the tip in the bill. He expressed his disagreement with this practice, stating that tipping should be based on the quality of service received. “If you’re not satisfied, there shouldn’t be an obligation to tip,” said Dhlomo.
