This is not another list of gyms.

Fitness has evolved for people who want more than a traditional gym membership. It’s no longer just about stepping onto a treadmill to hit your numbers, log points, and grab a free smoothie, it’s about intentional living.

It’s about mental clarity, community, longevity, and everything that comes with it. We are focusing on spaces that seamlessly combine movement, recovery, and lifestyle.

Whether you’re looking for a women-focused training environment, a more personalised class, or a space that brings movement and recovery under one roof, these are some alternatives to explore.

The Well

Take The Well at Nine Yards (on the corner of Chester Road and Jan Smuts Avenue in Rosebank), for example. Set in lush, tranquil gardens, The Well is a dedicated sanctuary for movement, recovery, and connection.

The space combines movement, contrast therapy, and integrated medicine into one intentional system, helping members build strength, regulate their nervous system, and return to daily life clear, calm, and recalibrated.

Founded by Dr Niki Judelman (a chiropractor with over 15 years of clinical experience), Liziwe Ntuli (a yoga teacher with over a decade of practice, known for her precise and intentional approach to wellbeing), and Aspasia Karras (Vinyasa flow teacher, Sunday Times columnist, and former Wanted magazine editor), The Well is far from ordinary.

“The Well is a place where ancient practices and contemporary care meet in one beautifully considered space. Everything is designed to work in concert with you, supporting your wellbeing,” the team notes.

Pricing and entry: Joining starts from R1 750 per month (3-month minimum) for the Origin Package, which is perfect for athletes, runners, cyclists, and anyone prioritising recovery. It includes 10 flexible Well Credits monthly for recovery treatments and The Waters thermal therapy access, alongside the monthly newsletter.

Vista Club

Located in the leafy suburb of Hyde Park, Vista Club is an exclusive private members’ club designed for holistic living.

The club offers dedicated spaces for yoga and Pilates, recovery treatments, hammam experiences, massage therapies, a signature pool, and quiet places to pause. They also offer a curated dining experience in partnership with Nü, as well as access to seasonal retreats.

“Vista began with intention. A desire to create a place that feels calm. Considered. Where physical wellbeing, mental clarity, and social connection come together naturally. A place to spend time fully. Where the body softens, the mind widens, and the day unfolds at its own pace,” reads their manifesto.

Vista Club was founded by Victoria Gonzalez and award-winning South African DJ Black Coffee. The space was inspired by the couple’s global travels and their shared vision of modern living, design, and human connection. Official ambassadors include designer Thebe Magugu, media personality Bonang Matheba, and artist Lulama Wolf.

Pricing and entry: Founding Membership at Vista will set you back R5 500 per month (billed annually). No payment is required with your application. Membership includes invitation-only access to quarterly Founding Member gatherings, a preferential rate secured for five years, preferred pricing across Vista Wellness treatments, and up to 8 complimentary movement classes per month.
