Summer calls for a change in the fragrances you reach for. As temperatures rise, scents should feel fresh, effortless and well suited to the season. But choosing a summer fragrance is about more than finding something that smells good. Your signature scent can be an extension of your style and personality, reflecting your mood and leaving an impression long after you have left the room.
Whether you are heading into a meeting, spending a weekend by the coast or dressing for a summer evening, there is a fragrance for every occasion.
Brian Lekgoathi, education manager at Skins Cosmetics, shares his advice on choosing a fragrance for warmer weather, making it last longer and finding a scent that feels distinctly your own.
The fragrance notes to look for this summer
When choosing a summer fragrance, consider the notes that appeal to you and how you want your scent to make you feel. From aromatic herbs and crisp citrus to luminous florals and ocean-inspired compositions, there are several fragrance families worth exploring.
Brian recommends exploring four fragrance profiles for warmer weather.
Fougère: Aromatic compositions built around bergamot, lavender, sage and vetiver, resting on a base of soft woods and musks. Their herbaceous freshness feels clean and effortless in the heat.
Luminous florals: Fresh, sparkling compositions featuring Turkish rose and rose centifolia, lifted by citrus and fruity notes. They bring radiance without heaviness.
Citrus: Crisp notes such as bergamot, grapefruit, neroli and bitter orange offer an instantly refreshing effect, often in a classic cologne style.
Aquatics: Marine and oceanic notes evoke the Mediterranean Sea, the open ocean or tropical waters, capturing the feeling of summer itself.
The best starting point is to explore the fragrance families you naturally gravitate towards, rather than choosing a scent based only on the season.
How to make your fragrance last longer in summer
Warmer weather can influence how a fragrance develops on your skin, making application and layering worth considering.
Brian recommends starting with well-moisturised skin, as hydration can help fragrance last longer. Layering is another way to enhance a scent, whether you pair your fragrance with nourishing body oils and creams, add a hair mist or explore dedicated layering fragrances such as Layer+.
Application also plays a role. Brian recommends applying fragrance to the back and sides of the neck, creating a scent trail while keeping the fragrance close.
His approach to fragrance application is straightforward: “More is more.”
However, how generously you apply your fragrance will depend on its strength, the occasion and your personal preference. Reapplying throughout the day can also help refresh the scent when needed.
Eau de parfum or eau de toilette: Which is better for summer?
Choosing between eau de parfum and eau de toilette comes down to your mood, personal preference and the occasion.
For daytime, an eau de toilette may feel just right, while an eau de parfum can come into its own on more formal summer evenings, whether you are attending an intimate dinner, a gala or a night out.
Concentration is not the only factor that determines how a fragrance performs, however. The composition, application and your skin can all influence how long a scent lasts and how it develops throughout the day.
Choosing a fragrance is an expression of personal style
For Brian, fragrance is not simply about smelling good. It is also about personality, mood and individuality.
“Contrary to popular belief, most perfumes are unisex and are composed for personality, mood and emotional expression rather than gender,” he explains.
“Choosing a scent is much like having a wardrobe philosophy: your style, the colours you love, the weather and your mood all shape what you reach for on a given day.”
This approach encourages fragrance lovers to look beyond the traditional distinction between scents marketed to men and women, exploring compositions that appeal to their individual tastes instead.
The same thinking applies when choosing fragrances for different occasions. A fresh, understated scent may suit a working day, while a more expressive composition might feel right for a summer evening. Ultimately, the fragrance you choose should reflect who you are and the mood you wish to convey.
Summer fragrances to add to your radar
From delicate florals and refreshing citrus notes to fruity compositions and deeper, more expressive scents, these recommendations offer different ways to build a fragrance wardrobe for the warmer months.

Finding your summer signature scent
A signature fragrance does not have to be one scent worn every day. It can be a small collection that reflects different sides of your personality, from a fresh daytime fragrance to a more expressive scent for evenings and special occasions.
Take time to explore different fragrance families, test scents on your skin and allow them to develop before deciding. You may find that the fragrance you reach for on a warm afternoon is different from the one you choose for an evening out.
All fragrances featured are available at Skins Cosmetics.
