Friends and family of the late Nomakula ‘Kuli’ Roberts held a memorial service for the media personality on Wednesday.
The former Kaya 959 Breakfast show co-host passed away last week.
One of her high school friend’s Ayanda shared in her tribute speech that Kuli first introduced herself as Cynthia.
“She was always playing games, making everyone laugh. Her crazy sense of humour meant people gravitated towards her and she embraced everyone. What many people may not know about Kuli is that behind the laughter and the jokes was a woman who loved hard.”
Attending Diocesan School for Girls in Grahamstown, Kuli kept in touch with all her high school friends.
“At school, young as we were, when we were treated like we terrorists, it was Kuli who stood up. She put herself in the frontline when we were being discriminated. As much as I know everyone feels like she’s gone too soon, I really believe Kuli achieved everything she was meant to,” Thoko Ngendani shared.
“She was loud, undeniably loud but she used her voice and advocated strongly for equality. If there’s one thing she detested, it was inequality.”
Kuli was known to be a good friend of the underdogs. She was protective of the LGBTIQ+ community and was a strong advocate for the equal rights of people living with albinism.
Refliwe Modiselle, a model with albinism said her relationship with Kuli started when she was just 19-years old.
“Kuli was fiercely protective of people with albinism. She became an ally and I am so grateful that she took me under her wing and in a way adopted me.”

As her family and friends remembered the media personality, a common theme was prominent in their tributes and that was Kuli was often the voice for the voiceless.
Kaya 959 ‘In the Morning’ co-host Skhumba Hlophe started by thanking the Roberts and Mboya families for “giving us Kuli.”
“Working with her and Bob Mabena, I think I gave Kuli and Bob the best laughter of their lives. There was one episode of 180 with Bob that Kuli was on the floor. She was crazy. Speaking her mind. If I could write a page in her book, her page would include laughter, love and loudness. One thing we should ask when we are writing in our books is are we living a lie or are we owning our truth like Kuli did?” Skhumba shared.
Skhumba said the media industry can swallow you whole and you have to be a tough skin to get as far as Kuli did. “So thank you to Kuli’s family for giving us Kuli for all these years.”
Her Trending SA co-host Nina Hastie was a fitting Programme Director for Kuli’s memorial service. The comedian mirrored Kuli’s funny side and her witty personality.
Many of her friend’s shared that there were so many plans they had made with Kuli. The memorial service was held at the Birchwoord Hotel in Boksburg, with stage and decor by TrueLove Magazine.
