Ke December boss, it’s the beginning of the silly season.
A time when things, “slow down”, which is really code for “let’s-go-wild”.
That definition differs depending on who you are.
If you’ve just completed matric, you’re going from the “window to the wall”.
If you’re older and you had a good year, you’re likely planning spendthrifts and parties you’ll want to remember and forget.
Some want to go wild with a good book, early nights, cleaning and reorganising the home, and possibly offering more time to the church community.
This may be normal end-of-year behaviour but in 2021 the unreformed grinch, COVID-19 and its newly acquainted uncle Scrooge, Omicron are blockers to it all.
Removing the focus from the dark cloud, this is a time for giving.
Not everyone had a good year, so here are a few inexpensive ways to feel that adrenaline rush the season usually inspires.
-
Give back by starting with yourself.
The year was exhausting whether you were employed or not. The unemployment rate for the third quarter in South Africa just reached a record high of 34.9%.
Begin the process of giving by starting with yourself.
Accept all the challenging and negative situations of the year and find your inner peace.
“We can never obtain inner peace in the outer world until we obtain peace in ourselves,” Dalia Lama.
Some wisdom is timeless for a reason.
Give back to yourself so you can be open and willing to give to others.
-
Be open to receiving
This may sound counterintuitive during a time to give, but if you’re open to receiving, you’re more willing to give.
Everyone needs a little help from time to time.
Be open to laughter and doing something outside of your comfort zone.
This will open your mind to knowing what you want and it will allow you to set boundaries and create purpose.
-
Make time for family
Real family connection is healing.
It offers a blanket of comfort.
Family is not just the group of people you’re related to.
It is also the friend or neighbour you have a special connection with.
Positive interaction sweeps away negative thoughts.
Invite more of this into your space and embrace the change.
Make time for these three simple steps, to help end the year gracefully.
