34/35 is the age when most footballers retire from professional football as they can no longer keep up with the intensity of the modern game. Only the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo (36), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (40), and Thiago Silva (38), have managed to play in the best leagues in the world past the age of 35.
However, one Japanese footballer is changing that rule, at 54-years-old, Kazuyoshi Miura is still playing professional football in Japan’s top-flight football league.
He began his professional career in 1986 after signing for Brazilian side Santos. He played for other Brazilian clubs including, Palmeiras until he returned to Japan in 1990.
He represented the Japan national team from 1990 until 2000 and was the first winner of the IFFHS Asia’s Footballer of the Year award.
Kazuyoshi holds the record for the oldest goalscorer in the J League, oldest professional footballer, and footballer with the longest professional career.
Muira might break his own record for being the oldest active professional footballer as he shows zero signs of slowing down.
He has been married to model Risako Shitara since 1993 and they have two kids together.
