Kaya Drive: What does it mean when spouses take off their wedding ring?

A wedding ring symbolises a commitment, the bind between two partners. Does taking it off mean that your marriage is on the rocks? That’s the question the Kaya Drive team debated on Monday.

Kaya Drive’s traffic reporter Tyroline Franks expressed that some women find a married man more attractive. It boils down to the elusive charm of wanting what you can’t have. Ty also said that the conversation about rings should be had before you get married so both partners are aware of each other’s expectations.

That way when your partner does take off the wedding it doesn’t indicate that your marriage has hit rocky waters.

In Tsholo’s case it was just a matter of the ring interfering with her lifestyle. Makeup and working out at the gym meant she could either misplace it or stain it. She spoke about her commitment to her marriage not changing based on the absence of a ring on her finger.

Sandile van Heerden shared the same sentiments. The Kaya Drive sports personality doesn’t like jewellery, although he is happily married and expecting baby girl with his wife, he does not wear a wedding ring.

The team were divided on the ring indicating that someone is off limits because “people cheat even with a wedding ring on.” That’s not what stops people from stepping out on their partner. “For me a ring doesn’t symbolise my love for my wife and my commitment to her stands because this is my life partner,” Sandile shared.

Sizwe wears a ring on his right ring finger but it’s not a wedding band. He has had it on for years, so much so, that there’s a tan-line on his finger. Guess this means when he does eventually tie the knot his wedding ring will not come off.

Taking off the wedding ring after fights

Some people do remove their wedding ring after a fight or if they are upset with their spouse. They do this to make their spouse feel insecure about their marriage. Taking off the ring is a non-verbal “threat” that they are rethinking the union. It’s about making their partner feel guilty about the fight and using the absence of the ring on their finger as a statement.

Dream ring

For some women especially, a ring is a big deal. If it’s their dream ring, there’s no way it comes off and this points to more than sentiment. The dream diamond ring is a mark that this man chose her to be his. It means he puts her first and would go to any length to make her happy.
