I’m probably the worst person in the world to watch a movie with, not because I’m disruptive, quite the opposite actually, but like Sizwe and the other members of the Kaya Drive team, we have a low tolerance for people who ruin the movie for others.
Call us movie snobs but there’s nothing worse than someone who tries to have a conversation with you while you’re watching a movie, especially at a cinema.
There should be a special place in the fiery pits of hell for people who are on their phones during a movie, and those who sit there loudly chomping on popcorn or slurping and sloshing around their slushy.
Is it honestly that difficult for people to sit attentively (and quietly) during a movie for an hour or two?
If you’re like me and hate confrontation, you probably just sit there, blankly staring at the person, in hopes that you can telepathically will them to stop being so annoying. I know I do.

The dos and don’ts during a movie:
-
Spoiler alert
No one likes a know-it-all, so don’t ruin the movie for others. This is one of the unspoken movie codes for motion picture lovers. Regardless of how many reviews you’ve read, trailers you’ve watched and news you’ve kept up with, keep your theories on endings, plot devices and spoilers to yourself.
-
Turn your phone off!
This rule is non-negotiable. Don’t switch your phone on silent, switch it off! Unless you’re a doctor on call and it’s a matter of life and death, your phone being on during a movie is not cool.
-
Pause and rewind
If you’re watching a movie at home, don’t pause or rewind a movie you’re watching with other people. Be courteous of others as they are also taking time out of their day to fit this movie in.
-
Eat your snacks and drink your drinks quietly
As with most of these rules, it helps to read the room. Don’t scoop enormous mounds of popcorn into your mouth. Chew with your mouth closed. Don’t suck every drop of liquid from the container and shake all the damn ice in the process.
-
Have a conversation about the movie during the movie
Sssh! Don’t ruin the movie for others. The “no talking during a movie” rule should be a given. Wait for the movie to end. It can’t be that important.
