The South African government on Tuesday withdrew a circular, authorising priority covid-19 vaccines for senior politicians and their staff barely hours after it was issued.
There was a widespread backlash on from multiple circles, with many asking why do politicians always get preferential treatment over citizens.
ANC selfish government putting its own “elite” politicians first. Why should Lindiwe Zulu be vaccinated first before all street hawkers & cashiers? Why should Nathi Mthethwa get vaccine before Kaizer Chiefs players?

The rejected circular stated thatdepartment ministers, deputy ministers, premiers and MECs, together with their staff, would now be eligible to be vaccinated. It also listed diplomats and people travelling outside the country for work or business, students and sports people leaving SA.
Thomas and Skhumba asked Kaya 959 listeners who they felt should be given the right to jump the queue:
People that are extremely exposed to the virus
People who should skip the line and be vaccinated are people in the Taxi Industry , Financial sectors, Street vendors & Retail. This are the people who are extremely exposed and with greater risk of contracting the virus #ThomasAndSkhumba @KayaON959 @thomasmsengana pic.twitter.com/kH6KHsgHVi

The department issued a second circular on Tuesday, withdrawing the initial one in its entirety.
“Following the circular on the vaccination of special groups and individuals against covid-19 there have been numerous comments, queries and submissions that indicate that the circular is unclear in its intentions. The circular is withdrawn in its entirety,” the circular read.
