An Alexandra High School Grade 9 learner was stabbed to death, allegedly by a Grade 7 pupil late last week.
“It is alleged that the deceased was stabbed by a girl learner from Pholosho Secondary School, also in Alexandra, and that the incident occurred in the township at around 7pm,” said Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi.
He said according to reports, the deceased learner succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
“The matter has since been handed over to the police for further investigation into circumstances surrounding this horrific incident,” he said.
Lesufi has tasked the school’s SGB with investigating the cause of the fatal stabbing.
“What transpired is truly saddening and we would like to share our deepest condolences to the family and school community for this loss. We also denounce, in the strongest terms, all violent acts by our learners. The SGB must investigate and take necessary steps in dealing with such matters,” the MEC said.

Last month, 14-year-old Qayiya Mgaye was stabbed during a fight at the Pholosho Secondary School in Alexandra.
It is alleged that the school’s disciplinary committee was dealing with a fight involving other learners when the second fight broke out. The youngster was rushed to hospital and died later.
The 15-year-old murder accused later handed himself over to police. He has since appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court. The matter was postponed to 8 October.
At Jeppe College, a 17-year-old boy was stabbed several times in the back during a fight. EWN reported that a fellow schoolboy stabbed the victim with a pair of scissors.
The boy’s mother said a group of learners allegedly bullied her son before attacking him.
