Two Grade 10 learners have been reunited with their families after they were kidnapped this week.
The incident occurred in Mamelodi East after school on Tuesday afternoon. One of the learners visited the other and accompanied her to the local clinic.
The girls, aged 15 and 16, attend the Hoërskool Straatpresident C R Swart in Waverley, Pretoria.
Gauteng education officials say as they made their way to the clinic, two men driving a Mini Cooper approached them.
The men allegedly forced them into the vehicle and coerced them into taking drugs.
“Once the girls were in a disoriented state after taking drugs, the men drove with them to their homes and demanded that they steal laptops and cellphones for them. Afterwards, the men drove the girls to a mall where they managed to escape,” says spokesperson Steve Mabona.
Mabona adds that “due to the deranged state they were in and not knowing where they were, the girls ended up sleeping in a secluded area in the outskirts of the township”.

Girls undergo medical examinations
He says residents in the area helped the girls find their way home in the morning.
“The girls are scheduled to undergo psychological and medical examinations to treat any possible trauma or harm caused during this incident,” he says.
Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, welcomes the girls’ safe return.
“We commit to providing them with all the support they need after the harrowing incident. We also strongly remain hopeful for the safe return of other learners who sadly went missing this month,” he says.
Meanwhile, the search continues for a Grade 8 learner who has been missing for the last two weeks.
The GDE says the Hoerskool Straatpresident C R Swart learner went missing on November 3.
Mabona says the school contacted the girl’s mother on November 8 to ask about her absenteeism.
“The mother informed the school that her daughter allegedly left saying she will be visiting a friend and has never returned home since. This matter has been reported to local police authorities who are currently investigating the whereabouts of the learner,” Mabona says.
