A 50-year-old man has appeared in court on charges relating to human trafficking.
Johannesburg Central police officers arrested Ahmed Kafecho last week. Police pounced on a house in Zakariyyapark, south of Johannesburg. Officers rescued about 50 Ethiopian nationals, aged between 12 and 50.
Kafecho also faces alternative counts of attempted extortion and kidnapping.
“The attempted extortion and kidnapping alternative counts stem from allegations that the accused demanded money from the families of the men held captive, in exchange for their release,” says NPA spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane.
Officers reportedly found some of the victims hiding in the ceiling of the three-bedroom home.
Mjonondwane says Home Affairs officials are processing the rescued men to determine their status in the country.
The court postponed the case to 25 October 2021 for further investigations and a possible bail hearing.
