South African actress Thuso Mbedu has won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Performance for her role as Cora Randall in The Underground Railroad.
Hosted by the Film Independent Organization, The Independent Spirit Awards celebrate and honour the independent film and television community.
The awards ceremony took place this past Sunday, 6th March 2022 in California, marking the award show’s 37th anniversary.
Thuso Mbedu was nominated amongst Jasmine Cephas Jones (Blindspotting), Deborah Ayorinde (THEM: Covenant), Anjana Vasan (We Are Lady Parts), and Jana Schmieding (Rutherford Falls).
Upon making her way to the stage to accept her award, the first-time Spirit nominee and winner appeared to be visibly stunned by her win.
“They told me a number of times to prepare something and I really didn’t,” Thuso shares in her acceptance speech.
In her speech, Thuso showed appreciation to everyone including Barry Jenkins who is the creator and director behind the Underground Railroad production.
“Barry Jenkins, Thank you for absolutely everything. I really really appreciate you!”
She also thanked casting director, Francine Maisler for her guidance and support.
“Francine Maisler…Thank you for everything. Thank you for your guidance”
The international movie star took to her Instagram to humbly express her gratitude for this recognition.
