South African chef and restauranteur, Siba Mtongana’s kids tried Mopane worms for the first time and the reactions are priceless.
Each of the celebrity TV chef’s four kids was curious to know what the dried worms taste like but were equally unsure about the thought of eating a worm.
Siba’s younger son Linamandla asked his mom a number of questions including what the highly nutritious, indigenous worms taste like.
When his mom explained, “They taste sort of like the bark of a tree, in texture and are a little salty,” the young, adventurous foodie proceeded to break the worm in half.
Looking inside, Linamandla was a little surprised to see what the dried snack looked like and asked his foodie mom if he was about to eat the worm’s eyes or butt.
Siba’s patience when her kids expressed hesitation to try something new was noted, and she answered each of their concerns, encouraging them to try something different, because different is not a bad thing.
The Cape Town-based family was on holiday in Limpopo when they came across the edible caterpillars, and bought some to try at home.
In a bid to give her family an experience of other cultures across South Africa, Siba also tucked into the worms, exclaiming how good they were, which put her kids at ease, with each of them trying the worms and being surprised at how good they were.
Mopane worms are large edible caterpillars which are also called madora, amacimbi or masontja, and while the worms can be cooked in a brothy sauce, most people enjoy the worms dried as a crunchy, salty snack.
