Gospel singer Rebecca Malope is nursing minor injuries after falling onstage over the weekend.
The multi-award-winning Gospel singer told TshisaLive that she tripped in her high heels at the funeral of her friend, Zanele Mbokazi.
Malope who has an honorary doctorate from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the University of California for her contribution to the music industry, said she is resting and using ointments on her bruised knees.
“I couldn’t wear sneakers to the funeral. I had to show respect at Zanele’s funeral. I wore high heels which caused me to trip onstage. The heels made me unstable even standing up, and I was left with a bruised knee and twisted my ankle.
Since Saturday, I’ve been receiving text messages from friends and family checking up on me. I think I’m getting old and I’m no longer that energetic.
Even though I fell many times, I thank God that my friend received a proper burial and her work was showcased successfully. I’ll be taking a rest and nursing my knee at home, using ointments to make it better. I thank God I suffered minor injuries.”
The Queen of Gospel as she’s affectionately known quickly turned the potentially embarrassing moment into one of grace and resilience. After the initial shock, Malope rose from the stage floor and immediately reassured the audience that she was fine, flashing her trademark smile.
