“Please never sing the National Anthem again,” was the seemingly unanimous message to South African artist Nicole Magolie.
Nicole sang the anthem ahead of the Springboks’ Test Match against Italy on Saturday, 19 November and had many South Africans scratching their heads over “the slowest rendition in history.”
While the artist claimed that her delivery of Nkosi sikelel’ Afrika, was a result of the conductor starting off slow, those watching said it wasn’t just the speed or lack thereof but her voice itself.
“Unfortunately, the conductor started too slow, I tried to pick up the speed but I had to follow the band. The acoustics also had a delayed effect on everyone involved. But the most important thing is the emotional aspect.”

Not only was it dismally slow but some rugby fans said they felt they were watching a funeral instead of a big Test game.
“I had to check that my stream wasn’t on 0.5 speed.”
Several social media users wanted to know who Nicole Magolie is as they had never heard of her before and questioned how artists are selected to sing the national anthem.
“I don’t know who’s in charge of selecting the singers for the South African anthem when we play abroad, but they hate RSA. @nicolemagolie was the most recent to absolutely butcher our beautiful anthem. I hope she is never allowed to sing our anthem again. #ITAvRSA“
